Unicorns are popular mythical creatures that children enjoy. The iconic single horn and rainbow colors make this adorable creature a favorite character in different stories. 

Let children explore how unique unicorns are with these beautiful crafts that will encourage them to imagine a magical adventure.

1. Unicorn Mask

This mask can be used as part of a children’s costume for parties, pretend play areas, or stage play. Children will improve their fine motor skills by cutting and assembling this fantastic mask. 

Use the mask to mimic different movements of a unicorn, such as galloping, trotting, and walking. Doing these will help improve children’s gross motor skills and coordination. 

Download and print the free unicorn template from the site. Cut out and trace on pieces on cardstock. Use white for the head, pink for the ears, black for the eyelashes, and different colors for the hair. Use the glitter foam sheet for the horn. 

Cut these out and assemble them. Use glue to attach the pieces. Refer to the pictures on the site for the step-by-step process. Let the mask dry. 

Attach the paper straw to the back of the mask. Decorate with rhinestones or any available embellishments to make the unicorn look fancy.

2. Mixed Media Paper Unicorn

This craft is a great way to introduce the concept of mixed media art to children. They will understand that different materials can be used together to create a tactile art piece that will provide a wonderful sensory experience for them. 

Children’s fine motor skills will improve as they make this craft. They will also learn to use recyclable materials that benefit the environment. 

Outline a horse’s head on a newspaper and cut it out. Glue the head on white cardstock. Cut out strips of newspaper and fold them accordion style. Stick these to the head for the mane. Cut out a triangle and stick it on the head for the horn. Let this dry. 

Cut colorful yarns and add to the mane. Stick the googly eye on and use the marker to add the smile and nose. Squeeze glue on the unicorn’s outline to make a border and sprinkle with some glitter to make it shimmery.

3. Finger Puppet Unicorn

Finger puppets are an excellent tool in helping children develop their fine motor and oral language skills. 

Use this craft to go with the book “You Don’t Want a Unicorn” by Ame Dyckman and have children retell the story to improve their comprehension. 

Make the unicorn’s body by cutting a rectangular shape from the white cardstock. Trim the corners to make them rounded.  

Cut out four square holes in the bottom of the cardstock for children to insert their fingers. Ensure the holes are large enough for the children’s fingers to fit. Use a craft knife for this step. 

Next, cut out the unicorn’s head and horn from the remaining cardstock. Refer to the pictures on the site for this step. Attach these to the body of the unicorn. 

Cut out strips of glittery ribbons and glue them on the unicorn for the mane and tail. Finally, add the googly eye to complete the craft.

4. Rocking Paper Plate Unicorn

This cute paper plate unicorn is an excellent craft for unicorn-themed lessons or parties. 

Use it to teach positional words. Place it under the table, behind the chair, or beside a box. Ask children to find the unicorn to practice using the positional words in their sentences. This task also helps improve their oral language skills. 

Take a paper plate and cut it in half. Take both ends of the half circle and make them meet in the middle. Fold the sides to make a triangle. Staple the ends to secure. 

Cut strips of colored construction paper. Take both ends to make a loop and attach it to one side of the paper plate to make the mane. Do the same for the bangs. Add cutout ears using white and pink paper. 

Cut out the shiny horn from glitter construction paper. Attach this and use the marker to add facial details.

5. TP Roll Unicorn

This unicorn craft is excellent for children to make during unicorn-themed parties. Make the unicorns in different colors to help improve children’s color recognition skills. Use this craft to teach children about rainbow colors. 

Discuss the different facts about unicorns. Explain that using recyclable materials, such as toilet paper rolls, benefits the environment. 

Cut the construction paper wide enough to cover the toilet paper roll. Attach this to the roll using glue. 

To make the unicorn’s bangs, loop the yarn around one’s fingers and tie. Cut to make these look like colorful hair. Attach these to the top part of the tissue roll. Do the same for the tail but with a longer length. Attach to the back of the tissue roll. 

Cut out the horn from the glitter foam sheet and the ears from construction paper. Glue these on the unicorn and use the marker to add the rest of the details.

6. Clothespin Unicorn

Turn wooden clothespins into an adorable craft that can be used as counters and help children improve their three-finger grasp. Assembling this unicorn craft will help improve children’s fine motor skills and strengthen their hand muscles. 

This craft can also be used to discuss the similarities and differences between a horse and a unicorn. It will help improve children’s observation and critical thinking skills. 

Download and print the free unicorn template from the site. Cut out and trace on a white foam sheet. Paint the craft stick and four clothespins white. While waiting for these to dry, cut strands of yarn to make the mane and tail. 

Glue the mane on the neck of the unicorn and the tail on one end of the craft stick. Glue the googly eyes on the head. Attach the four clothespins to the unicorn’s legs. Clip the chair using the two clothespins to complete the craft. 

Repeat the process to make a horse, using the horse template and brown paper. Let kids make each animal unique and explore their creativity.

These paper plate unicorns are wonderful giveaways for parties or use as decorations. The feathers and glittered cardstock have a unique texture that provides a great sensory experience for children. 

Use them as math or literacy mats. Make them in different colors to improve children’s color recognition skills. Assist children when using the hot glue gun. 

Start with painting the paper plate with the desired color. Let this dry. Next, use the free unicorn template from the site. Download and print the template. Cut these out and trace the ears on white and pink while the horn is on the glitter cardstock. 

Cut these out and use the glue gun to attach them to the paper plate. Arrange the paper flowers and glue them on the paper plate. Add the feathers.

8. Unicorn Rainbow Craft

This unicorn craft teaches children the different rainbow colors. It helps children remember the order of these colors in the rainbow. It is also a great craft to practice cutting skills for young children. 

Use different lengths of colored paper strips for children to compare or measure. Prompt children with sentence structures, such as green are longer than red. Doing this will help develop children’s oral language and critical thinking skills.

9. Popsicle Stick Unicorn

Turn ordinary craft sticks into beautiful unicorn crafts that can be used as decor, placeholders, or refrigerator magnets. The site suggests using this as Valentine’s day gift but it would be suitable for any time of the year. 

Children’s fine motor and color recognition skills will improve as they make this craft. Use different sizes of craft sticks to make different sizes of unicorns for children to compare. You may need to pre-cut the shapes for young children.

To make this craft, glue together seven craft sticks. Once the glue dries, paint it white and allow it to dry. Cut the same length of yarn and stick these on the top part of the craft sticks for the hair. Trim the ends if necessary. 

Next, cut out ears from white cardstock and attach them to the head. Cut out the horn from red and white cardstock. Use the craft knife to cut small rectangles on the white horn (this step should be done by an adult). Glue this over the red horn and attach it to the head.  

Add cut-out eyelashes and use paint to add the nose.

10. Flying Unicorn Paper Plate Craft

This 3D unicorn craft is a fun activity for children. The unicorn seems to bounce on the rainbow. This craft is perfect for the book “How to Catch a Unicorn” by Adam Wallace.

Children will improve their fine motor, color recognition, and hand-eye coordination skills by inserting the pipe cleaners to make the rainbow. 

Download and print the free unicorn template from the site. Have the child color or paint this and cut it out. Stick on the googly eyes. Paint the paper plate light blue. 

Once dry, poke holes on each side of the paper plates. These holes will be for the pipe cleaner rainbow. Insert the red, yellow, blue, green, and purple pipe cleaners. Twist the ends to keep them in place. Add cotton balls for the clouds. 

Next, wrap a silver pipe cleaner on a marker to make a coil. Stick the unicorn and insert it on the paper plate. Twist the end to secure.
