Cooking the Common Core

Cooking the Common Core: Bringing Educational Standards to Life in the School Garden

OVERVIEW
The first workshop of its kind in San Francisco, Cooking the Common Core is designed to give classroom teachers and garden coordinators all of the skills and tools they need to offer engaging, standards-based cooking lessons for students in the outdoor classroom.

Whether it is using multiplication tables to scale a recipe for four to feed the entire class, or following the steps of a recipe presented orally, the Common Core Standards in English language arts and mathematics naturally come alive through cooking. During the workshops, teachers will participate in a hands-on cooking class for each recipe, which will include an in-depth explanation of the ingredients, materials, and procedures. Participants will cook and eat together. Lunch is provided.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
These workshops, designed specifically for 4th- and 5th-grade educators, will provide a fun, creative avenue for participants to learn new techniques to reach students with a variety of learning styles, encourage healthy habits, and gain confidence in the outdoor classroom.

The interdisciplinary lessons being offered link directly to the 4th- and 5th-grade Common Core standards in English language arts and mathematics, and will include variations for teachers who wish to expand the activity into multiple class sessions or use the cooking exercise to meet other academic standards. Past participants who work with other grades report the lessons are easy to adapt.

WORKSHOP STIPEND
Classroom teachers working within San Francisco Unified School District will receive a stipend of $100 for the six-hour training, as well as lunch from Bi-Rite Market. Each participating school also receives an incredible outdoor cooking kit worth more than $100 (Burton stove and fuel, cutting boards, paring knives, vegetable peelers, mixing bowls, and more) for participants to bring back to their school site for school garden cooking. If another participant from your school site has already attended Cooking the Common Core and received a kit, a new kit will not be issued.
